Teal'c recs

Teal'c
I had an attack of total randomness and watched "Men With Brooms" today. It turns out that 1. Paul Gross can indeed make curling seem intense and passionate and beautiful and poetic (that man just shines. He shines. He makes me believe in auras), 2. I find Molly Parker stunningly hot, with her freckles and her dimples and her laugh, when she's not playing a wan opium addict, and 3. Wacky Canadian humor does indeed win.

Seriously, that's more cheese than I've consumed in movie form... possibly ever, and it was fun.

I am a day late and a dollar short- actually, I am going on a week late- but there was some fabulous stuff at the [info]teal_ficathon this year and I need to rec.

I seem to be trending to linkspamminess

whimsy
Adorable solider is adorable.

(I got that from [info]miss_porcupine's DoD photo zen tag, which includes quite an impressive amount of plane porn and silly men jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, but also tends to show soldiers being utterly adorable. Including a video wherein a Marine greatly resembles my grandmother's sheltie (but cuter).

Abigail Nussbaum is my favorite reviewer, and I'm rather crushed by her evaluation of Star Trek. It's about half the (IMO) not very interesting criticism that Star Trek shouldn't be "updated" and about half the (again, IMO) much more valid criticism that she just didn't like this Kirk. But the real reason I point it out is for the passage where she describes her Kirk:

My Kirk was first and foremost the one from the movies. The one who got old and fat, who paid the wages of his youthful womanizing with a son who wanted nothing to do with him, and of his meteoric career with an admiralty he loathed. This Kirk was shocked, simply flabbergasted, at no longer being that brash young man who could do no wrong, but in a way he never stopped being that person. Even dying he was full of wonder and a sense of adventure.

I love character meta that makes me fall in love with that character all over again. How perfectly expressed. Oh, Kirk.

Lastly, the Clios are in! They were medium-good this year: There's the T-Mobile dance which makes me grin like a dork for the rest of the evening every time I watch it, a haunting and magical public-service ad, and the hilariously surreal Abe Lincoln. The legacy ads included one I hadn't seen before, from The Guardian.

End linkspam. I promise.
Science fiction
Every day I think "I've been away from the flist forever! I should post!" and then I don't. Basically, a combination of a particularly bad bout of underemployment and a nostalgic trip back to some old computer games has left me doing that weird hours/sleeping way too much/can't quite manage to do anything/not quite depressed thing.

So. You know a meme I saw going around a few days ago? It was that Ten things I assume you know about me meme )

And this cut-tag is all about Star Trek )

And this one will go outside the cut: There is already K/S porn. It is smoking. In fact, there's a whole huge kink meme but I don't have time to sort through the dross right now. Read this. Read it now. I'll be in my bunk.

In A Mood

lust
I am In A Mood. Have some pictures:

Apparently, this is from a Dolce & Gabbana ad shoot. I approve of the wildly sensual, hedonistic vibe paired with the sharp suits. (NSFW)

this is a lot more straightforwardly pornographic. I will admit it's the dogtags that did me in. Stargate fandom has obviously done something to me.

this is het. I know, weird, eh? Barely PG-13, and probably I should not admit how freakishly hot I find it. There also seems to be a certain commonality with the last one...

Somewhere around lj (I wish I remembered where) I saw an icon that read "peppered with actual" across the top and "on top" on the bottom. In between? Yup, a picture of John.

I love fandom.

SPN (Kind of meta babblings. With 4x01 spoilers) )

SGA 5x09 )

The first issue of the OTW's academic journal. Good stuff there, especially the bit about Star Trek vidding- fascinating.

About the women in Whispers...

me
I've spent something like 12 hours in the car over the past four days, which explains all the tl;dr.

First, recs: )

I just reccd gen and femslash. Hold me.

I didn't feel the need to say anything about Whispers )

But, while we're rambling about the women in Whispers... )

Sometimes I really like writing Not!Fic like that. It's a whole lot easier than actual fic.

tl;dr meta part 1, SG1- centric

  • Sep. 12th, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Clever
I kind of adore character meta that comes from different ways of organizing/categorizing characters, by whatever psychological classification you use. I could eat that type of meta up with a spoon.

Take, for example, Harry Potter Hogwarts houses - Torchwood, Dr Who, SPN, SGA, SG1 )

Or Myers-Briggs, for instance )

But I just read another categorization framework I found interesting )

So let's apply it to Jack and Daniel )

Why I find this interesting: )

Jesus, I will SHUT UP now.

I have been gorging on post-VVC vids

crazy fangirl
I am so freakin sad about the cancellation of SGA. I mean, I will miss those characters! But then again, SGA is pretty much the epitome of a "fic is better than the show" fandom, and I almost like SGA better the less of it I watch, so, you know...

Vid stuff, from VVC con reports I've seen )

Jack/Daniel forever!

Jack/Daniel
As promised: Civilian and Military, or Why I Ship Jack and Daniel (plus why I don't want to watch SG1 seasons 8-10, why the Space Monkey scene is the shippiest thing in the history of anything, and why exactly Menace is so deeply awful) Now with extra random tangential babbles!

Beware the tl;dr. No really. You have been warned. )

Oh my God I talk too much. Coming next: This civilian/military dynamic in Atlantis, how John/Rodney is exactly the same and completely and totally different all at once, and how the Miller's Crossing scene is also the shippiest thing ever. Then I am DONE and will SHUT UP, I swear.

Why I Love SGA Anyway

  • Jul. 13th, 2008 at 4:56 PM
Atlantis
SGA is a really very bad show, in way that make it drastically more fannishly appealing )

Look, that was like, part one of ten on all the thoughts I've been collecting, because I am the wordiest person I know. Tune in next week for "Civilian and Military, or Why I Ship Jack and Daniel (plus why I don't want to watch SG1 seasons 8-10, why the Space Monkey scene is the shippiest thing in the history of anything, and why exactly Menace is so deeply awful)" Look, for some reason I suddenly can't write fic, so this is what I'm gonna be doing for awhile instead, okay?

Fun ever stop?
I babble about Sam/Dean by way of SG1. It works in my head. )

Sam and Dean totally pass the broccoli test, by the way. Sam knows Dean wants broccoli, but he's pissed off that Dean won't just TELL him, and refuses to get it until Dean TALKS to him, and then finally gives up and gets in anyway. Dean, in the meantime, knows Sam wants broccoli, but he gets pie instead because he knows Sam will like that better. Then Sam gets pissed at Dean for not knowing he wanted broccoli, and Dean can't admit that he knew about the broccoli but got the pie instead to try to make Sam happy (because that's completely girly and emo), so he just pretends the pie was for himself anyway. I think that counts as a pass, in its own warped way.

Thought on squick and SPN reactioney

Before I get to SPN, I really would kind of like people's input on this: I read a fic. It squicked me. Thoughts here. )

It seems that all I have done in this journal for the last three weeks is FLAIL about MY SHOW. This week was is little less flail-y, mostly because of the Big Thing that everybody is talking about, but I did still love it.

Listy! )

Oh Ianto...

I took the day off work yesterday because I was utterly desperate to have a day ALONE. I have been going to into full introvert-panic mode because Dustin has been home so much recently and I spent all weekend at the con with 1000 people.

And so, of course, Dustin took the day off work too. )

A long spoilery Torchwood meta about Ianto )

ETA:And of course, the minute I write all this, [info]poisontaster metas it better and [info]technosage writes it. My flist, they are BRILLIANT.

SPN belated ep reaction AKA PRETTY BOYS!

I couldn't grab the stupid SPN torrent before work today, so I had to go all day knowing it wasn't even busy downloading for me. Then I just COULDN'T STAND IT any longer and skipped out of work a whole two hours early to run home and start downloading it.

*facepalm* I fail at being a responsible adult.

This is spoilery, and tl;dr as well, because it's me.
Our boys are SO LUDIRCIOUSLY SEXY. The writers, maybe not so much. )

Okay, so Jared gave out a YOOOGE spoiler at Fangoria. At least, everyone is saying it's a huge spoiler, even though it's been broadcast in foot-high neon letters in every episode of season 3 so far. It's kind of like, "HUGE SPOILER! Next episode, Dean drives the Imapala! OMG!" But I shall spoiler-cut like a good fan.

This is meta, but it's prompted by a SPOILER! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! )

Oh God Heroes, why must you do this to me?

I love Fandom. )

This post, about the differences in style between fanfic and original fic, is incredibly insightful. It comes from someone who is clearly willing to treat fanfic, e-published fic, and romance novels all as published writing worthy of serious analysis, which keeps me from going into defensive mode, and her eventual conclusions are just freakishly spot-on. Heh. We in fanfic "wallow in characters." I kind of love the phrasing of that.

In which I rant about Heroes. Spoilery for aired eps. )

In short, no matter how much Volume 2 sucked, I am still fannish about this show because I think if they pruned some deadwood (and yes, I am uncomfortable about calling most of our COCs deadwood, but the fact is that they are and that is the fault of the writers) and now that all the people we care about actually have a chance of MEETING and INTERACTING and moving in some recognizably FORWARD direction, I still think there could be a fantastic Volume 3.

Oh please.

SPN and life-happiness.

Point the first: There is a campaign to get Jared and Jensen on an ALA Read poster. I LOVE those posters- My Orlando Bloom one was the only celebrity poster I've ever put on a wall, until it ripped, and I was just toying with buying Sendhil's to replace it (He's holding the Hardy Boys. That is so cute it just slays me.) Anyway, J2 are just excellent choices for those posters, as Sam'n'Dean almost certainly hold the world-record for most library friendly TV heroes ever. And Sam's skill in that area is treated with a lot of respect, as a hunting skill of value right up next to combat skills. I'm just saying, they're perfect. I'm trying to get up the guts to email about it now.

Various SPN natterings RE: Bedtime Stories )

I finally have a job. It's an utterly random short-term temp thing paying a dollar less than what I asked the temp place for, but it's close, and I really needed to get off my butt. So that means I have to follow a schedule now, and wake up in the morning, and make myself healthy food to eat for lunches, and workout in the evenings, and generally pretend to be an adult again. Because as much as I was loving staying in pjs all day long doing nothing but watching TV and reading fanfic, I think three weeks of that is just about enough for me.

So first Constance was coming for Thanksgiving. Then she and dad were coming on the 8th. Then I was going there for Thanksgiving. Now she is coming here on the 9th. Um, maybe. It's all been a bit of a roller-coaster ride, really. But there seems to be a definite decision complete with booked tickets now, so maybe it will actually happen? If so: YAAY! \o/

We will go to Magic Mountain, if it's open (did the fires close it? Uh, I guess I need to find that out) and we will play Guitar Hero and watch TV and movies and maybe go to the beach or whatever and make yummy food and oreo milkshakes and just generally have an utter blast. I need this so bad. *homesick*
